 LAS VEGAS SHOWBIZ NEWS

The renowned Riviera Hotel & Casino is proud to celebrate its historic Diamond Jubilee Anniversary – 60 years on the famed Las Vegas Strip. The actual anniversary is on April 20, (my birthday, too.) Anniversary celebrations will take place throughout the month of April, with more than $500,000 in cash prizes that will be given away in the Classic Cash Giveaway. With the iconic property closing its doors to the public at noon on Monday, May 4, 2015, the opportunity to come experience one of the Las Vegas’ most historic properties is coming to an end.

The Best of Las Vegas Awards have just come out. There are two winners in each category—one chosen by the readers and one chosen by the staff of our city’s daily paper.

Britney: Piece of Me and Love were chosen as the best overall shows, Pin Up and Zombie Burlesque took the honors as best Adult Show.  There is no best all-around performer or best singer any longer.  Best magic show went to Illusions and Penn & Teller. Best Showgirls went to “Jubilee!” and Fantasy, and best bargain show went to Donny & Marie Osmond (really…tickets start at over $100) and Sin City Comedy.  And in their own category, Best Cirque show went to “Love,” and “KA.”

Sadly, there is no legitimacy in these awards any longer.  It is not a vote of who is really the best, but instead about the campaigns in which each of these shows engage. PR machines are making this award their goal.  Who has the most friends on Facebook? Who has the biggest ads? Some of these shows came out with pleas and ads for votes with fervor. Some even offered incentives. The best production shows (for me) are still “Jersey Boys” and “Le Reve.” Jeff Civilico and Mac King are the best bargain shows.
Other great shows of note should be: “Vegas: The Show,” “Absinthe,” and “Raiding the Rock Vault.”
For the second consecutive year, Kristin Banta Events was awarded the title of “Event Planner of the Year” by the Event Solutions Spotlight Awards. The Spotlight Awards are an annual awards presentation dedicated to recognizing the best and the brightest event professionals in the industry. The awards are presented in a variety of categories and honor both individuals and companies for their body of work in the previous year. Winners were announced at the Rock the Night Industry Awards Celebration held on March 10th, 2015 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Legendary comedian Don Rickles, who has starred in Las Vegas theaters longer than any other performer in the history of the gaming mecca, is back for his 55th consecutive year as a Las Vegas headliner when he brings his one-of-a-kind humor to The Orleans Showroom on April 25th and 26th; each evening at 8 p.m. Rickles took his first step toward national fame in 1957 when Frank Sinatra wandered into the small Hollywood nightclub where Rickles was performing. The still-unknown Rickles eyed Sinatra and said, “I just saw your movie, The Pride and the Passion, and I want to tell you, the cannon’s acting was great. And, make yourself at home, Frank. Hit somebody.” Sinatra doubled up laughing and became one of Rickles’ biggest boosters among Hollywood celebrities. Rickles soon became the “in” comic among Hollywood stars, who flocked to his nightclub engagements to become the targets of his insults. Rickles has also starred in several films and television shows, including Casino, Kelly’s Heroes, Rat Race, Gilligan’s Island, The Andy Griffith Show, Get Smart, The Unit, Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, the latter of which was recently honored with five Oscar Award nominations. Rickles has received two Primetime Emmy Awards, including Best Individual Performance in a Variety or Musical for the 2008 HBO special Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project. In 2009, cable network TV Land honored Rickles with the “Legend Award.” In 2007, Rickles made his mark in the literary world with his memoir Rickles’ Book.

Cedric ‘The Entertainer,’ Mike Epps, Eddie Griffin, D.L. Hughley, George Lopez and Charlie Murphy will come together for one historic night of comedy for ‘The Black and Brown Comedy Get Down’ at The Colosseum at  Caesars Palace on Saturday, May 2 at 11 p.m.

Cedric ‘The Entertainer’ is an actor and game show host, best known for co-starring along with Steve Harvey on The Steve Harvey Show and starring as Eddie in the Barbershop films.

Mike Epps got his big break as ‘Day-Day’ in Next Friday and Friday After Next. Epps has also appeared in Hangover and Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins in addition to voicing ‘Boog’ in Open Season 2 and ‘Sonny’ in Dr. Dolittle 2.

Eddie Griffin has appeared on the big screen in Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Scary Movie 3, John Q, and Armageddon, to name a few. Griffin performed on Russell Simmons’ Def Jam Comedy, many standup specials and starred in the hit comedy series Malcolm and Eddie, where he even wrote and produced four episodes, one of which featured his mentor, Richard Pryor.

D.L. Hughley was a member of The Original Kings of Comedy, a correspondent for The Jay Leno Show, host of D.L. Hughley Breaks The News on CNN and the original host of BET’s ComicView. He is the host of his own radio program syndicated in many markets.

George Lopez is a multi-talented entertainer whose career encompasses television, film, standup comedy and late-night television.  For two seasons, Lopez hosted Lopez Tonight, a late-night television talk show on TBS, as well as television’s groundbreaking hit sitcom George Lopez, which ran for six seasons. Lopez has risen to become one of the premier comedic talents in the entertainment industry and known for his extensive charity work with various foundations.

Charlie Murphy spent the past two decades solidifying his position in Hollywood as a true acting, writing and producing talent. He’s appeared in feature films such as Lottery Ticket with Bow Wow, Ice Cube and Mike Epps, Our Family Wedding and The Perfect Holiday. Charlie wrote Norbit, which opened #1 at the box office, with his brother Eddie Murphy. Charlie was a cast member on Chappelle’s Show and stars as ‘Vic’ in Adult Swim’s new show Black Jesus.

Suzanne Somers, one of America’s most popular and beloved personalities, and for years a top-selling Las Vegas headliner, is stepping back onstage to launch a sophisticated nightclub act at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Scheduled to debut May 23, 2015, “Suzanne Sizzles” will entertain for a total of 28 weeks through May 2016 in the newly named cabaret venue, “SUZANNE’S” at the Westgate. During her years in Las Vegas in the 1980s, Somers was recognized as one of the best female entertainers by media and fans alike for her show, which she starred in at the Westgate Las Vegas when it was known as the Las Vegas Hilton. With “Suzanne Sizzles,” Somers is creating a cool, sexy return to the heyday of the Rat Pack and the Great American Songbook. Accompanied by her band, the setting will be elegant and the environment intimate, with cocktail seating. The show will transport audiences back to the days of lush sound, glamour, and luxury.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino presents Kenny Chesney Pre-Concert Pool Party Weekend at REHAB Pool with performances by Uncle Kracker and Dee Jay Silver, poolside games, specialty cocktails and more on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4. When the sun goes down each night, partygoers can make their way across the property to Chesney’s shows at The Joint. Guests can take advantage of classic drinking games such as beer pong and cornhole while inflatable bulls fill up the pool. Set within the hotel’s 4.8-acre tropical oasis, the party will offer refreshing beverages such as Corona Extra and specialty cocktails infused with Blue Chair Bay® from Chesney’s Caribbean-inspired line of premium rum. Mini kegs will also be available to VIP attendees.

Due to demand, comedian Jeff Dunham will be adding four months of performances to his highly-successful residency “JEFF DUNHAM: Not Playing with a Full Deck” at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The new shows are scheduled for June 10 – Oct. 4, 2015. Joining Dunham on stage in his new Las Vegas home is his famed troupe of sidekicks: Walter the Grumpy Retiree, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, redneck Bubba J, the manic purple creature Peanut, the spicy pepper from south of the border José Jalapeño, and Peanut’s own ventriloquist dummy Little Jeff, a mini-version of the ringmaster himself. They may have all been conceived and hand crafted by Dunham, but his characters, who are anything but dummies, have now taken on a life of their own, each with their own legion of fans.

Terry Fator: The VOICE of Entertainment, now features the newest character Rusty the Robot. Rusty made his debut at The Mirage as Terry celebrated his 6th year at the resort. Rusty The Robot is The Mirage’s new prototype robot designed to do the jobs of all employees. While you may think he’s a big fan of heavy metal, he’s actually able to sing virtually any song in any voice! From the Tin Man and Elvis to Bruno Mars and Garth Brooks, he has a voice to be reckoned with and an intellect second to none.

It’s so fun Made L.V. is doing it twice! After the hit Turkey Toss Cornhole Tournament in November, the folks at Made L.V. are bringing back the popular game and party for the spring.  The Spring Fling Cornhole Tournament and Tailgate Grill Out is set to take place on Saturday, April 11 from 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the popular Tivoli Village hotspot. The cost is $20 per team and a link to the sign up can be found under Events at www.facebook.com/MadeLVTavern.  Team spots are limited.

Red Heads rejoice! Rock & Roll Hall of Famer SAMMY HAGAR and his new supergroup, The Circle, will perform a blowout concert at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center on Saturday, April 11. Led by Sammy Hagar, also known as “The Red Rocker,” The Circle features Michael Anthony, the renowned rhythm section bassist who has played with him for the past 30 years in bands including Van Halen and Chickenfoot; Vic Johnson, guitarist from Hagar’s band The Wabos; and Jason Bonham, the acclaimed drummer and son of iconic Led Zeppelin drummer. The group will take fans on a musical journey through rock history with a set list spanning four decades including hits from MONTROSE, Hagar's solo career, VAN HALEN and beyond — and with Bonham on board, guests can jam out to a few Led Zeppelin classics. Hagar is a Grammy Award-winning vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and musician, who in 2007 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen.

Pinoy Pride Festival, a Filipino cultural event showcasing the rich history and culture of the Philippines, will take over DLVEC April 3 – 5, 2015. Guests can enjoy the tastes, sounds and spirit of the Philippines with authentic food, craft vendors and entertainment as well as traditional carnival rides and games. Locally based artists, comedians, dance groups and musical groups will perform each night at the festival.

Nevada’s original wine festival, UNLVino, will celebrate more than 40 years of “sipping for scholarship” April 16 through 18, 2015. This year’s festivities will feature three days of spectacular events, including Bubble-Licious, Sake Fever, and the Grand Tasting, that will showcase an array of incredible cuisine, wine, spirits, beers and cocktails, as well as top celebrity chefs and exciting entertainment. UNLVino continues the mission of Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada to raise millions of scholarship dollars for the students of UNLV’s William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration.

The “Sleeping Lioness,” Lupita D’Alessio, will perform at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Friday, April 3 at 8 p.m. on her Cuando Se Ama Como Tú tour.  After an 18-year recording hiatus, D’Alessio has triumphantly returned with a Gold Record Award in Mexico for her new album Cuando Se Ama Como Tú. D'Alessio will give her fans the opportunity to enjoy her greatest hits, such as "Ese Hombre," "Ni Loca," "La Diferencia," "Mudanzas" and "Que Ganas De No Verte Nunca Más," among other songs. Joining D’Alessio on stage will be Mexican singer, Reyli. Reyli began his career with the band Elefante, but is best known as an accomplished solo singer and composer. With songs including “Amor Del Bueno,” “Desde Que Llegaste,” and “La Descarada,” Reyli has also written songs for artists such as Alejandra Guzman, Alejandro Fernandez and Beyonce.

One of the most inspiring movies of our time, “Rudy,” is now a one-man show starring Rudy Ruettiger and will make an encore performance at the Troesh Studio Theater in The Smith Center Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 7 p.m. Ruettiger’s one-man show takes on a journey as he shares his life story of how he accomplished his dream of going to Notre Dame and how he convinced Hollywood to make a movie of his life, which earned him an invitation to the White House. The play includes a multi-media presentation with scenes from the blockbuster movie as well as personnel photos of his family of 14 brothers and sisters.      The Clark County Fair & Rodeo is at Clark County Fairgrounds Apr 8th to 12th. The Clark County Fair had its beginning back in 1965. Known as the Moapa Valley Fair, it was held at the Overton Community Center. Compared to the present day fair, this first fair was small in size. Nevertheless, it had all the flavor and elements of a good old county fair. From this simple beginning, the Moapa Valley Fair became an annual event. Each year new attractions were added, such as a carnival midway, junior livestock show, and a rodeo. Throughout the seventies and early eighties, the fair took place at various locations in the community such as the local park, churches and schools. Each location lacked some key elements necessary to house the ever growing and popular fair. In 1981 the fair committee decided to pursue a more permanent location for the fair. This committee, under the direction of Grant M. Bowler, was able to obtain 190 acres of ground in Logandale from the BLM. With a grant from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and the State Legislature construction began. Many others also contributed their resources to aide in the development of the new fairgrounds. In 1986 the Moapa Valley Fair officially changed its name to the "Clark County Fair". By 1988, the property had been cleared and fenced. Four buildings, a rodeo arena and various landscaping had also begun to take shape. In April, although the buildings were not yet completed, the very first Clark County Fair was held. Since that time, the fair has grown rapidly. With great effort from many volunteers, new buildings, bleachers, stages and animals facilities have been added. In 1997 due to the ever so popular Rodeo, the fair once again changed its name. Now known as the Clark County Fair & Rodeo over 80,000 patrons come to the fair every spring. It has been the combined work and efforts of many volunteers that have developed and managed the Fair and successfully produced an old-fashioned, family oriented fair for so many people to enjoy. With a part time staff of four, and over 500 volunteers working together, we pledge to continue to bring this flavor and fun to each and every Fair!

National Association of Broadcasters will be at the Las Vegas Convention Center this year with nearly 100,000 attendees from the 13th to the 16th.
